State requests info from Maricopa County regarding election issue

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office was contacted by the attorney general asking for an explanation from the country about the voting issues.

PHOENIX — The Election Integrity Unit of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office is asking that Maricopa County provide a full, in-depth report regarding issues with ballot tabulators experienced on Election Day.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office was contacted by the attorney general asking for an explanation from the country about the problems voters faced while voting on Nov. 8.

The letter stated that the complaints “go beyond pure speculation” and included first-hand witness accounts, which raise concerns regarding Maricopa County’s legal compliance with Arizona electoral law.

Officials with Maricopa County say that there were 60 votes locations that had problems with the tabulators printer settings during Election Day.

According to the county, the machines were tested Nov. 7, without any apparent problems. However, the problem started just before Election Day.

“Election workers reported that, despite successful testing the night prior, the tabulators started experiencing problems reading the ballots printed on the BOD printers within 30 minutes of Tuesday, November 8 2022,” the letter stated.

According to the unit, due to the numerous reports of workers, observers, and voters, as well as the admission by the county that there were widespread problems, they are asking for more details. They want:

  1. Voting locations with problems with ballot-on–demand (BOD), printers, or tabulation
  2. Each voting location’s specific problems
  3. Any other questions regarding BOD printers or tabulators
  4. An extensive log of all modifications to the BOD Printer configuration settings
  5. Maricopa County’s specifications for BOD configuration settings are as per manufacturer technical specifications or internal technical specifications.
  6. This is the exact time that non-uniform settings in the printer’s configuration were discovered to be the root of the problem
  7. What was the method to reconfigure or update the printer configuration settings at each vote location? And when were they made the changes?

Maricopa County will also be asked to submit a detailed report about how the poll workers were trained in “check-out procedures”. Also, a copy each location’s Official Ballot Report with any discrepancies or explanations, will be required.

Maricopa County must respond to the requests of the attorney general before it submits its official canvassing to Secretary Of State. The canvass must take place on or before November 28, 2018.
