Political Parties, Monitors to meet NEC; No decision yet on delaying Postal Voting


COLOMBO, News 1st; The Secretaries from the political parties that will contest the upcoming Local Government Elections have been summoned to a meeting at National Election Commission on Tuesday (14).

According to Attorney Nimal Punchihewa of the National Election Commission speaking to News 1st the Chairman said that the current state-of-the-election will be discussed at this meeting.

He also said that election monitors had been summoned to the meeting.

Further, the Chairman said that the NEC would decide whether the delay of the Postal Voting process, due to the current crisis, will be decided at Tuesday’s (14) meeting.

Monday’s announcement by the National Election Commission (13 March) stated that the Government Printer had indicated that ballot papers would not be printed if funds were not received. This is a new obstacle to the upcoming Local Government Elections, which are scheduled for the 9th and 10th of March.

The Government Printer did not immediately respond to our request.

News 1st was informed by a member of the National Election Commission that there has never been a case in which payments were made to print ballot papers prior to the election.

Sources claimed that the payment was made during the elections.

Opposition parties have accused the government of trying to stop the election. However, government officials continue to claim that the economy is making it difficult to raise funds to support the elections.
