Number of 3D-printed guns soaring in New York

NEW YORK (WABC) — You can make an untraceable gun out of polymer in just a few hours.

All of this can be done on a 3D-printer, including magazines that hold up to 50 bullets. Silencers and other gun parts are untraceable.

New York is seeing a surge in 3D-printed weapons being recovered. In New York, there were 100 guns recovered in 2019, and 637 last year.

Last Friday, the NYPD made a break-in.

The new law, which was just introduced at Albany’s statehouse, would make using a 3D-printer to create guns and/or parts of guns a Class D crime. Selling the digital instructions for printing the weapons will be a Class A misdemeanor.

Brad HoylmanSigal, New York State Senator, said: “The pipeline will soon be on your kitchen counter.”

Linda Rosenthal, a member of the Assembly, said: “We can see what a big deal it is that they are allowed to print.”

As of now, anyone who prints guns is only charged with possession.

“But they are actually manufacturing guns, so we need a law to prescribe this conduct and call it by its true name,” said Alvin Bragg.

The DA’s Office and NYPD printed weapons to train and testify in trials about a process that continues to progress.
