New printers will triple production of passports


Soon, the government will triple the daily production of passports.

Kithure Kindiki of the Interior Cabinet announced on February 2 that the new printing machines will increase the production rate of passports.

“We’ve ordered new printers, and when they arrive we’ll triple or quadruple our daily passport printing,” he told the media in Nyayo House.

The Ministry revealed that delays and machine failures in the booklet procurement process had caused a backlog.

The CS reported that there were currently 58,000 applications for passports, and a printing capability of 5,000 per day. 

In response, the government Initially, I planned to lease new machines by private investors as buying new machines is expensive.

The CS announced that the “historical backlog” which had accumulated due to low investment, poor equipment and corruption over a period of many years was now technically resolved.

Kindiki says that once the new machines arrive, the government can begin issuing the passports in the shortest possible time.

Kindiki explained that to protect the country’s security, the machines will remain at the Government Printer. They will also be operated by government officials.

The CS  said the lease arrangement will mirror the current medical equipment programme between counties and the national government.
