MICR Printer Paper Jams and Feed Errors – 4 Common Issues and How to Fix Them

0

1. Because the check stock isn’t properly separated, paper jams and multiple sheets are being fed simultaneously.

You can use a fan to separate the blank check stock and reduce MICR paper jams. There are many ways to do this. Most people just hold one side of the stack of papers and flip through the pages. Then, they do the opposite.

Another method is to grab the stack of check stock and hold it by the short edges with the long edge on a surface. Next, bend the ends towards you like an upside-down “U”, then pinch the short ends tight, then pull the paper out again. This does a good job of separating paper in the middle.

Next, turn your hands in opposite directions. The separation will be rolled out towards the ends by twisting your hands. Place the paper into the tray. These steps will reduce the chance of paper jams and simplify daily paper-feeding operations.

2. Printer Errors: Message 242.09 / 243.09

These printer errors can indicate that the right side guide of the paper tray is not properly aligned against the tray’s check stock. Adjust the guide manually to make sure it is properly against the tray. This should fix the printer error.

3. Paper Misfeed – Dirty Pick Tires – Rollers

When the printer attempts to pull a sheet from the tray, but fails, misfeeds occur. The most common reason for misfeeds is that the rollers (also called pick tires) that feed the checkstock are dirty with toner or paper dust. Use an alcohol pad to clean the rollers. Wipe them off as they are being turned.

NOTE: If cleaning the pick tires and fanning the stock does not resolve the problem, then the printer will most likely need to be serviced. For assistance on the next steps, contact the technical support number of your MICR printer manufacturer.

4. Paper Curls Paper Exits Printer

This is often not an issue with the printer but with the moisture content of check stock paper. You should properly store your blank check stock. Keep it in the original packaging until you are ready to use it. To keep moisture out of the paper, store any unutilized stock in a container with a lid.
